Elgin, Illinois: Wish You Were Here

Elgin, Illinois: Wish You Were Here

$26.25

Elgin, Illinois, was founded in 1835. However, the community truly came into its own at the end of the Civil War, when the Elgin National Watch Company moved there and took the city name as its own. The name Elgin became synonymous with quality for over 100 years. Elgin, Illinois: Wish You Were Here tells the story of the town of Elgin during the 20th century, featuring vintage postcards of that period. Special events of historic interest include the tornado of 1920, and the Elgin Road Races, which gained national fame for a brief time around the World War I era. More than 200 pictures, culled from the collection of the Elgin Area Historical Society, and colorful narratives tell of the accomplishments by those first few generations who lived and died in the community. Author: Bennett, William E./ Elgin Area Historical Society Series Title: Postcard History Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 128 Publication Date: 2001/09/13 Language: English Dimensions: 9.20 x 6.60 x 0.34 inches

Palatine, Lake Zurich and Wauconda Railroad

$58.94

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Palatine, Lake Zurich and Wauconda Railroad (PLZW) was an 11mile (18kilometer) shortline railroad built to connect the towns of Palatine, Lake Zurich, and Wauconda in the northern part of the U.S. state of Illinois.Justin Orvis and Robert Wynn founded this railroad. They originally envisioned a 75mile (120kilometer) electric route throughout Lake and McHenry counties, but this was the only stretch developed. The route delivered freight and commuters to these communities, as well as vacationers to Dr. Wilsons Deer Grove Park picnic grounds (now Deer Grove Forest Preserve). The railroad had many problems due to secondhand equipment and the steep trestle built to cross the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern in Lake Zurich. The most famous engine on this route was nicknamed Old Maud and was purchased from the Chicago and North Western Railway. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. The passenger manifest was lost with the collision, but the sinking of the Lady Elgin resulted in the loss of more than 400 lives in what was called one of the greatest marine horrors on record. Four years after the disaster, a new rule required sailing vessels to carry running lights. The Lady Elgin disaster remains the greatest loss of life on open water in the history of the Great Lakes. Elgin Railroad Watch
how big was this train crew?

first of all this is the elgin, joliet and eastern railroad owned by CN now and i had seen a vid. none of this content belongs to me.

around 1:50 to 2:05 you will notice the engineer and 3 people on the ground, are those people part of the train crew or the company?

There’s really no way to tell. They might have two brakemen with the conductor but it’s doubtful these days. And Fish stated there were 5 crew members.Actually in the old days there were six. There were three brakemen.Head, rear, and the swing brakeman.
