Timepieces have served both functional and aesthetic needs since their beginnings with the sun dial. Discs have been a part of wristwatch design from the beginning however, they were fixed and made of porcelain. The need for a sturdier model for military use spawned the development of the metal disk. The neon backlight models were designed for the night club set, not only as a fashion accessory, but as functional timepiece that can be read in the dark.

This is not a financial status as is seen in some of the higher end Swiss made watches, but a fashion status associated with what is cool, groovy, rad or whatever the lexicon is at the time.
