Pocket Watch Guide

How to Care for your Watch

Your wristwatch is a very unique part of your attire. It not only has a very useful function by providing you with the time it can also be a beautiful piece of jewelry. The style of watch you wear can say a lot about you whether it is a fashionable dress watch you were to social events or a dive watch you wear for a day out on the water it is a very important part of what you’re wearing. But no matter what kind of watch you decide to wear you’re going to want to keep it looking and working like the you bought it for as long as possible. By following this guide you’ll be able to do just that. In this guide you’ll find general watch care and cleaning tips that apply to most watches, as well as more specific tips depending on what kind of movement your watch has.

General Watch Care

  • Your watch should be the last thing you put on when preparing to go out. Things like hair gel, perfume/cologne and make make you look great but the same can’t be said for your watch.

  • Even if your watch says it is water resistant you shouldn’t wear it in the shower. Soaps, shampoos and other toiletries can damage the gaskets that prevent water from entering. Also the hot water could distort the seals and cause them to fail

  • Remove your watch if you are going to be participating in any strenuous activity or be around substances like bleach and ammonia. You could damage the crystal and excess sweat can damage leather bands, and harsh chemicals can discolor precious metals.

  • If you wear your water resistant watch to go swimming in a pool or the ocean make sure you rinse it in clean water afterwards to remove any salt or chlorine that has accumulated. Also note that only watches rated as water resistant to 100 meters or better should be submerged for an extended amount of time.

  • While swimming or submerged the crown of the watch should never be pulled out as this will allow water into the housing. Whenever you pull the crown out to set the watch or wind it be sure to screw the crown back down to ensure it seals properly.

  • Your watch should always be removed while cooking. The only thing you want in your watches band is your wrist, not pieces of last nights dinner.

  • Your watch not only looks great it tells time. To keep your watch accurate keep it way from extreme heat or cold, this is especially true if your watch has a leather band. Also if your going to be near any powerful magnets like speaker magnets or computer monitors remove your watch. The mechanical workings of your watch can become magnetized and would stop keeping accurate time or just stop altogether. A reputable watch repair shop should have equipment on hand to remedy this.

  • All watches should be serviced every two years by a professional. This should be done to ensure that all the lubricants inside the watch are at the proper levels and that all the inner workings and the gaskets meant to keep water out are still in good shape and working properly. If you expose your watch to water more often than just normal summer water activities you should have the seals changed every year.

    General Watch Cleaning

  • When cleaning your watch try not to get the main housing wet, even if it is water resistant.

  • Make sure any cloths you are using are lint free. If not small pieces of fabric could become embedded in the bracelet or even work themselves into the workings of the watch.

  • You can soak the bracelet for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on how dirty it is in warm water and a mild soap such as baby shampoo or alcohol. Do not use alcohol if your watch has a pearl inlay on the links as alcohol will damage pearl.

  • Next just scrub the links of the bracelet with a soft bristled toothbrush to remove any remaining debris. Now use your lint free cloth to dry the bracelet.

  • You can remove the bracelet to make cleaning it easier but only do so if you have access to the proper tools and knowledge to do so.

  • If your watch has a leather wrist band you should make sure to remove your watch every night and while you bathe to allow the leather to breathe. Wipe it down with a damp cloth once a week to keep it clean.

  • When wearing a watch with a leather wrist band leave it loose enough so that you put your pinky in between your wrist and the watch. This is to leave room for air to get in and evaporate moisture which can remove the natural oils form the leather. It is also recommended to remove it when swimming or at the beach as tanning oils, sunscreen and chlorine can damage or discolor leather.

  • To throughly clean leather watch bands remove them and make a mixture of equal parts water and baking soda. Rub the mixture on to all sides of the leather and let it sit for an hour.

  • Wash the baking soda mixture off and let the band dry over night before putting it back on the watch.

  • If there is a boot, tack or leather store in your area get some saddle soap and work it into the leather to restore it’s natural luster. If you can’t find saddle soap a few drops of olive oil can be substituted. Before putting anything on a light colored wrist band try it on an inconspicuous part of the band to make sure the color is not affected. Next just polish with a clean dry cloth and your leather watch band should look good as new. You can then clean the watch housing with a slightly damp cloth to remove any smudges.

  • Even a rubber watch band will need some care and maintenance to stay looking good. Just like leather, tanning oils, sunscreen and chlorine can deteriorate a rubber wrist band. At the very least after going swimming or applying any sunscreen or the like you should rinse the band off.

  • To get your rubber watch band completely clean simply get a soft bristled toothbrush and some warm soapy water. Use a mild soap like baby shampoo or odorless colorless hand soap. Simply scrub your watch band clean taking care to not get the main housing wet if you haven’t removed the band form the watch.

  • To deal with hair line scratches on the crystal by rubbing a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste over it. Be careful to not get it into the small areas like where the crystal meets the bezel as it will be very difficult to get out. Wipe it clean with soft damp cloth and buff dry. You can repeat this if necessary.

  • For deeper scratches you will need to bring your watch to a professional to have it repaired or replaced.

    Special Tips for Automatic Watches

  • Your automatic watch is a very special watch! It does not require you to wind it yourself like a manual watch nor does it require batteries like a quartz. It gets it’s power by way of a weighted rotor system inside the watch. When you naturally move your arms while walking this causes the rotor inside to move, winding the main spring and keeping your watch running. As amazing as this sounds the first designs for it were originated in the year 1770 in Switzerland. They were not very popular at the time due to the fact most people had Pocket Watches. The watches didn’t move much in peoples pockets so they wouldn’t stay wound.

  • Since your automatic watch is powered by motion if you aren’t going to wear it everyday you might have to wind manually if you haven’t worn it in a few days. Most automatics should stay wound for about 30-48 hours with out being worn. If you have a large collection of watches or you are not intending your automatic for everyday wear, it might be best to invest in an automatic watch winder. Theses machines simulate the motion of a human wrist to keep your watch wound.

  • Another thing to consider about automatics is your going to be playing golf, tennis or any other sport or game where you will have rapid jarring motions of your arm it is best to remove your watch. The sudden motion could damage the rotor system inside your watch.

  • While your watch may say shock proof or shock resistant on it, this is not a feature you will want to test on a daily basis.

  • If your automatic stops you will have to wind it manually to start it before putting it on your wrist. Ten to fifteen turns of the crown should be enough to start it, then put it on and let the rotor system fully wind it. Some watch companies recommend winding your watch when you take it off at night or in the morning when you put it on to keep it fully wound, this should be done at the same time everyday. Check with your watches manufacturer to see what’s best for your watch.

Special Tips for Manual Watches

  • If you have a manual watch you will have to wind it yourself to keep it moving. You should wind your watch at the same time every morning to keep your watch performing at it’s peak all day long.

  • The reason for winding your watch in the morning is that the movement in the watch has to compensate for your arm’s natural motion during the day. Having your watch fully wound will ensure a proper consistent flow of energy form the main spring to the movement.

  • Wind your watch even on days you’re not going to be wearing it. It’s best for the watch if the gears keep moving inside so that the lubricants in the watch get spread across all the parts of the movement.

  • When winding your watch do so slowly while not wearing the watch. If you attempt to wind your watch while it is on your wrist you are putting unnecessary strain on the winding stem which could lead to damage. Once you start to feel resistance that is enough, over winding could damage the main spring. Some experts suggest once your watch is fully wound to turn the crown back a few revolutions to help redistribute some of the lubrication. This could also take some of the strain off of the spring. Check with you watches manufacturer to see what’s best for your watch.

  • Some watches have a screw down crown. If this is the case for your watch remember to screw it back down so that water and other debris don’t find their way into your watch.

Special Tips for Quartz Watches

  • Quartz watches run on a battery and don’t need be wound or even to stay running.
But they still need care and attention to stay looking good and working properly.

  • Your quartz watched should get serviced every 2-3 years. While the batteries inside the watch may last longer than that you should have serviced and the batteries changed anyway to ensure no problems arise.

  • Quartz watches with analog faces need to be serviced so the insides can be cleaned and lubricated. After time the lubricants began to thicken and some of the internal workings could wear down creating a fine metal dust which could become abrasive.

  • Temperature effects quartz watches less than mechanical watches but care should still be taken to not expose them to temperature extremes as the gaskets inside meant to protect your watch form water can still be affected by the shift in temperature.
