Fashion-Forward Men’s Watches for the Office and Beyond

The history of men’s watches is a long and interesting one. Just a few years after the first spring-driven clocks were introduced in the early 16th century, watchmakers in Europe were producing personal timepieces, which they called “pocket clocks.” In the beginning, these clocks or watches were quite cumbersome. They had to be worn on a chain around the neck. It would take another century or so before they could fit in a man’s pocket.

Like most new technologies, the pocket watch was a luxury item. Pickpockets would target men who carried them and impressive rewards were offered for their recovery. These timepieces were handmade by expert horologists (watchmakers) from England, France and Switzerland.

In the early days, all watch movements were powered by verge escapement, an antiquated technology that was developed for large public clocks. Though it worked just as well in miniature models, the friction that was created in verge watches meant that they were not especially accurate. Jewelling was developed as a way to protect the contacting surfaces from wear and to increase accuracy. Most modern mechanical watches rely on jewel movement.

The watch remained a luxury item until the process was streamlined after the Industrial Revolution. Large watch houses in France, England, Switzerland and the United States turned out hundreds of thousands of reliable pocket watches each year.  By the middle of the 19th century, most middle class men could afford a descent pocket watch.

Nowhere was the pocket watch more popular than on the American railroad. Many of the passengers and all of the engineers and conductors carried them. Watches used on the railroad were actually held to a higher standard, since inaccurate timepieces had caused more than a few deadly crashes.

The pocket watch was the personal timepiece of choice for nearly four centuries. It was not until an entire generation of young men were deployed to the trenches of World War One that they quickly lost their appeal. Because they were carried in the pocket, these watches were often damaged or lost during combat. As a result, the men stopped carrying them altogether. But since the officers needed timepieces to coordinate troop movements, they were issued wristwatches. Heretofore, wristwatches were often dismissed as ungentlemanly. There was, however, no arguing with the results. Wristwatches were not only more durable, they were also more affordable.

Where are we now?

The wristwatch is the timepiece of choice for modern men. Pocket watches are little more than relic of an earlier era. Few of the top watchmakers even produce them anymore. But that doesn’t mean that its influence has not been felt. Shortly after the pocket watch declined in popularity, horologists began producing more elaborate and decorative wristwatches that were clearly modeled after the early pocket watches.

Many young professionals actually own more than one watch. While there may be more, we have identified three distinct types of watches that were designed for different environments and activities. There are sports watches, dress watches and diving watches.

Dress Watches

These timepieces are typically worn to the office or to a formal event or affair. They often have a watch face (covering) that is made of mineral crystal or sapphire. The watch band may be either metal or some type of animal skin, often leather or alligator. Dress watches do not have digital displays. Rather, they have analogue displays. A dress watch can be powered by either Quartz (digital) or mechanical movement.

Sports Watches

Made for the outdoors, sports watches would look altogether out of place in an office setting. To begin with, sport watches often have digital displays. More often than not, they also have rubber wristbands. The watch face or covering is generally acrylic, since it is less expensive than the other crystals and it is quite durable. Sports watches may also have chronograph features. A chronograph is a small stopwatch that the owner can use to time his laps in the pool or on the track. Sports watches are also almost always water resistant.

Diving Watch

Many shoppers make the mistake of confusing a sports watch with a true diving watch. While sports watches are typically water resistant, few of them actually meet the rather rigid requirements for underwater diving. At a minimum, a diving watch must have a water resistance of at least 100 meters. Of course, most diving watches are safe at far greater depths.

Because they must past a battery of tests, the average diving watch has a water resistance of around 300 meters. If the watch passes the current ISO 6425 test standards, the designer is granted the privilege of marking his timepiece with the word “Diver’s” to set it apart from the many pretenders. True diving watches can be quite pricey. Many of them are also quite stylish and can be worn in the boardroom or the deep blue sea.
